Bay Area Saxophonist Oscar Pangilinan

Saxophonist. Educator. Performer.

My music is the spiritual expression of what I am — my faith, my knowledge, my being…When you begin to see the possibilities of music, you desire to do something really good for people, to help humanity free itself from its hangups…I want to speak to their souls. – John Coltrane

ABOUT ME

Everything you wanted to know about me. Or maybe didn’t?

Hooked On Music

Born and raised here in the Bay Area, saxophonist Oscar Pangilinan began playing clarinet in Horace Cureton Elementary. In the sixth grade, he made the switch to saxophone so that he could perform with the district’s prestigious Alum Rock Jazz Band. It was there, under the direction of Director Bill Nicolosi and woodwind instructor Joe Wood, that Oscar learned to love and appreciate music. Oscar has since continued with his passion, and is an active musician and teacher in the Bay Area.

Performance

Oscar has performed with a variety of Bay Area based musicians, including John Worley, Brian Ho, Kristen Strom, Aaron Lington, Jason Lewis, John Shifflett, and more. Oscar performs throughout the area regularly at venues like Pampas in Palo Alto, the Hotel DeAnza’s Hedley Club, and the Rosewood Sandhill Spa and Resort. He currently leads his own modern jazz ensemble, the Bad Five, which will be debuting at the 2014 San Jose Jazz Summer Festival in August.

Teacher and Learner

Since 2007, Oscar has been actively teaching children of all ages and backgrounds. As the woodwind instructor with the Alum Rock Jazz Band for five years, he worked closely with young jazz students, guiding them in their understanding of jazz fundamentals. In 2009, Oscar accepted a position teaching at the annual San Jose Jazz Camp, and has since worked with talented educators like Dave Gregoric, Kristen Strom, Wally Schnalle, Charles McNeal, John Worley, and Dave Martell. In 2014, Oscar worked with the San Jose Jazz sponsored Progressions Program as a beginning woodwinds instructor for students from grades 4 through 6.

During the regular school year, Oscar directs the Jazz Ensemble at Joaquin Miller Middle School in Cupertino, where he learns and works alongside accomplished music educator and director Nancy Moser. Oscar also maintains a private studio of diverse students he teaches weekly throughout the Bay Area in a variety of disciplines ranging from basic technique and practice up to jazz improvisation and sight reading.

Education

In Spring 2014, Oscar received his Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies from San Jose State University. While there, he studied with the many great musicians on staff, including bassist John Shifflett, drummer Jason Lewis, trumpeter Jeff Lewis, trombonist Wayne Wallace, pianist Dahaveed Behroozi, grammy-award winning saxophonist & department head Dr. Aaron Lington, and the late pianist and longtime jazz educator Frank Sumares. With an emphasis in jazz studies, Oscar gained experience performing with the SJSU Jazz Orchestra and small group ensembles, as well as experience writing and arranging for both groups.

Living here in the Bay Area, Oscar’s also had the fortune of learning and working alongside other great saxophonists including Kristen Strom, Alex Murzyn, Charles McNeal, and Anton Schwartz.
